My opinion: I think "treatment resistant depression" is just another DSM label for people who may be having a very difficult time with life. It could be relationships, the job, how they were treated throughout life, etc. The medicalization of depression has not been fruitful based upon the current statistics - so many depressed people taking medication that did not work - hence they get the label of treatment resistant. Many of the psychedelic drug trials have immense therapy sessions. We do not know if it is the drugs or the therapy sessions that help people. There are also huge side effects that are not disclosed and/or they are discounted. You cannot do a true blind placebo study with psychedelics so studies will be biased. Also, what a way to give low mood people agency by telling them you cannot get better unless you take a drug. I am glad you are looking into these studies. Appreciate your work!

I am glad that the healing properties of psychedelics are becoming realized. However: what makes you think that people who went to medical school or some program of counseling are suddenly the best people qualified to administer these therapies? There are, indeed, wise men and women of great experience with psychedelics, here in the western world, in South America, in Africa...yes, I agree with the previous commenter, Kristina, that sometimes, perhaps not always, depression reflects the inability to fit in with a crazy world. In my experience, psychedelics --entheogens as they are sometimes called-- can give a person deep insight into the state of their soul, into who they really are, why they are here, what is their soul mission in this life... all things that can heal depression. I agree that the setting is extremely important. One medical professional who I completely trust to conduct these sessions and to teach others to conduct them, is Gabor Mate, M.D. There are others, and I know some of them, but they are mostly underground, because their practices have been illegal. I believe the awareness of the value of entheogens is yet another signal of the fundamental transformation of the medical paradigm, and of our society as a whole, which is emerging, and which needs to happen if western humanity is to survive on Earth. Let us pursue this with reverence. Thank you for this post! Haruhuani Spruce, M.D.
